o Presented by: Rainbow Center for Global Child Health

o Dates: June 16-20, 2008

o Venue: Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio

o Overview:

Now in its 12th year, this intensive interactive course examines the key problems and priorities in disaster situations as they relate to the most vulnerable victims of disasters. Morbidity and mortality are highest for children under 5 years of age, and half of individuals living in any refugee setting are under 15 years of age. o Who Should Attend:

This program is designed for pediatricians and primary care providers, nurses, NGO workers, mental health providers and other professionals interested in training for the care of children and families in disaster situations.

An intensive 5-day course targets those who might be involved in relief work or disaster response, that gives participants an overview of the unique needs of children in all sectors. Topics include malnutrition, water and sanitation, obstetrics outside the hospital setting, ethics, infectiuos diseases, gender based violence, developmental considerations in responding to children, and much more. The focus is on humanitarian emergencies in resource-poor settings, including refugee camps. Format is a combination of didactic lectures and small group discussions about a case history. It is also a great opportunity to network with colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
